OF End of Year awards

Mon Dec 14, 2015 8:50 pm

Hello, everyone!

A new year is approaching, and this means that it's time for Obsidian Fleet's annual End of Year awards. There are three awards: Character of the Year, William Riker XO of the Year, and James T. Kirk CO of the Year.

Character of the Year:

The rules state that only one character from each simm may be nominated, and that nominations must be approved by a sim's CO. The command staff have discussed this and, while it was a difficult decision, we came to the unanimous decision that the USS Portland's nominee for Character of the Year will be Lieutenant (J.G.) Sera Williams.

I will be writing a nomination for Sera, however if you would like to add to her nomination, please contact the command staff at ussportland@gmail.com so we can compile everyone's nominations and testimonials as to Sera's awesomeness.

William Riker XO of the Year

Similar to Character of the Year, if you would like to nominate Cmdr. Rouse for XO of the Year, please contact the command staff at ussportland@gmail.com. I will compile any nominations and forward them to the Fleet Services Director for submission.

James T. Kirk CO of the Year

This one is a little different. The James T. Kirk CO of the Year is nominated by TGCOs and TFCOs. However, they can approve nominations made to them by individuals or crews. Hence, if you would like to nominate someone for this award, contact your TGCO and TFCO at tg72a@obsidianfleet.net and tf72@obsidianfleet.net.

Sim of the Year

Sim of the Year is chosen from the sims that won each of the preceding 12 months' Gold Unit of Merit awards. The USS Portland, having not yet won a Gold Unit of Merit, is thus ineligible, however one of our sister ships (the USS Nightingale) is eligible.

So, start thinking about nominations, and if you would like to nominate someone, please write a short statement explaining who you are nominating and why.

Update -- the Portland has just won a Gold Unit of Merit award and is now eligible.

Also, there's still time to get nominations in...

Hello all,

OF has set a deadline of January 22nd for the awards. I'm asking you to please get them in by Tuesday, January 19th so that we can compile and submit them. See the email I just sent out.

Also, here is what we had to say about Sera. Please send me a supplemental nomination if you have anything to add or just want to support Sera.

***************************************************
The command staff of the USS Portland has decided unanimously that our nominee for the Obsidian Fleet Character of the Year award is Lieutenant (J.G.) Sera Williams, our Chief Engineering Officer.

Sera has been with the USS Portland the entire year, first as Assistant Chief Engineering Officer then, upon the resignation of her department head, she became the Chief Engineering Officer.

Over the past year, Sera has shown remarkable character growth. When her character first came aboard the Portland, she was fresh out of the academy and aside from being a skilled engineer was also a talented pilot. In that time, she had really grown as a character, including becoming a Chief Engineering Officer of a very old ship at a very young age.

As Chief Engineering Officer, Sera has been in a particularly important role on the Portland, being on the front-line whenever we are testing out new technologies such as the dark energy reactor.

Sera was key to the stabilization of the modified EMH “Holo-Meru” program and worked hard to save her, seeing that the program was possibly sentient. She had witnessed the death of Captain Alenis on Gamia III, and Captain Williams, her alternate future self, was key to stealing the future Portland and bringing back Captain Alenis. During this flash-forward to an alternate future, we also got to see one way how her character might involve as an officer and as a person. It was great to see one possibility of what the future could hold for Sera as we got to see Captain Williams in action in 2412, two decades into the future. Also, the relationship between the future Sera Williams and the half-Borg Marcus Kallan was one of the most interesting of the character relationships displayed in the 2412 alt-future.

During the first half of our Joint Mission, Sera played a critical role in the testing of the dark energy reactor. She was assigned temporarily to the team of Shras th’Karath, the scientist behind the dark energy reactor. Given a new uniform and a new role of supervising the installation of the top-secret dark energy reactor, she was torn between her engineering crew and Shras’ dark energy scientists. The player behind Sera did an excellent job of portraying his character being caught between two worlds, and of the tensions in engineering between Shras’ team and the engineering crew.

During this mission, Sera had been exposed to a large amount of dark energy radiation as she single-handedly saved the ship from a reactor overload. The radiation has been wreaking havoc on her body and her brain, activating latent ESP abilities in a manner similar to that seen in the TOS episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” This is an exciting plot device, and the way the writer has been portraying Sera’s uncertainty with her new abilities is excellent. I can’t wait to see where this takes Sera.

Finally, Sera is key to a number of valuable relationships on the Portland. Her ongoing close friendship with Ensign Nikki Barclay is definitely a high point in the character. Ensign Barclay has a lot of issues (many of which she shares with her uncle Reginald), and Sera has more than once kept her from having a complete meltdown. In addition, she is close to a number of other characters, including Lieutenant Kallan, Lieutenant Silverton, and the hologram.

For all these reasons, we believe that Lieutenant (J.G.) Sera Williams represents the best of Obsidian Fleet and is our nominee for Character of the Year.
