[APRIL FOOLS] USS Portland -- new format

Fri Apr 01, 2016 5:07 am

Hello everyone,

I have an important message for you all from the captain's desk of the USS Portland.

Image

As you know, the USS Portland is on the cutting edge of simming in Obsidian Fleet. While everyone else is still using the clunky, outdated, Nova system, we are one of a very small number of simms using a sleek, advanced forum interface. While others are flying Sovereign and Prometheus classes, the Portland is situated on a state-of-the-art Miranda class vessel.

Unfortunately, the simming community has gotten smaller over the years. People have come up with many explanations for this, from the lack of a Star Trek series on TV, to the rise of MMOs that deliver instant gratification. But it is clear to us that as a hobby, simming needs to keep up with the times or it will wither and die out.

For these reasons, the command staff of the USS Portland has come up with a radical new proposal. We have play-by-email, play-by-forum, and play-by-nova simms in Obsidian Fleet. But, with the support of Triad and our TFCO, the USS Portland will become the first play-by-STO simm in Obsidian Fleet.

Image

We need to go to where the people are at. And STO has way more players than the entire simming universe combined. So, from now on, all players on the USS Portland will be required to create a character in STO and join the fleet “USS Portland.” All in-character and out-of-character interaction will take place in the chatbox in STO, and we will strive for the same level of quality and depth to our writing, while also being able to play out our in-character interactions via the game interface.

Image

Unfortunately, starting from scratch in STO is difficult. We will need to build up our fleet’s assets, such as our Starbase and Embassy. Therefore, we will be implementing some new rules to build up these assets as soon as possible.

- All players will be required to be online for at least 12 hours per week, and will be expected to be grinding for fleet assets for most of this time
- Players will be required to contribute to fleet assets in order to post. Dilithium crystals can be easily obtained from sources such as mining, or can be bought with ZEN, which is easily obtainable for a small amount of real money. Posts will cost players 500 dilithium, plus one dilithium per word.
- In order to maintain uniformity, players will be expected to purchase uniform components and their avatars must remain in uniform at all times. There will be regular inspections, and anyone found out of uniform will be required to contribute 25 duty officers and 500 dilithium to our fleet assets.

Image

This may seem draconian, but there is a method to this madness. The more time we spend grinding out dilithium and fleet marks, the sooner we can start having fun.

I’d like to invite you all to join us so we can participate in our first mission in the new format. Our first mission will feature memorable Delta Quadrant aliens from Voyager such as the Benthans and Kobali. It will be a mission of intrigue, ancient archaeology, and unimaginable powers, and will be part of our first season with the new format, featuring everyone’s favourite masterminds who never get old, the Iconians.

The official launch party will be tonight. I’d like to invite you all to our starbase for the celebration. If all goes well, today, April 1st, will be remembered as the opening of a new chapter of the USS Portland and Obsidian Fleet.

You forgot to mention that we need donations from everyone. Micro-transactions can be a little hard to manage for a fleet first starting out.

I couldn't find the fleet or channel under fleetsearch for "USS Portland". Could the fleet admin on STO please post a character@handle for in-game email and fleet invites?
